There are 2 different arrangements of printer/carver seals in conjunction with Doi Hangaten seals: vertical and offset. On the vertical arrangement, from top to bottom you will see the Doi Hangaten publisher seal followed by the printer seal and finally the carver seal. On the offset arrangement, the publisher seal is at the top followed by 2 seals side-by-side but offset: the printer seal is to the right and slightly higher than the carver seal.
To my knowledge, all observers agree that Doi Hangaten prints bearing the vertical seal arrangement pre-date prints with the offset arrangement. However, there is a bit of controversy on the subject of the dates when each of the seals were used.
Ukiyoe-Gallery.com gives these dates:
My own studies have led me to very different estimates:
As you can see, I believe that there was considerable overlap between these seals. Some day, I intend to add a section on Doi publisher to my Shotei.com website and to build my case for these estimates.
Please be aware that there are some formidable shin-hanga experts who believe that I am mistaken. So, caveat emptor.
: hello, i have a 1936 print of Koitsu 'Maruyama Park in the Snow'. the carver/printer seal is Harada/ Itoh (1st Ito?). The publisher seal is Doi Hangaten i think. The print is on old paper but is in beautiful condition with no toning, margins are white. I was wondering what the actual printing date was on the print. I see where Harada started in the 1930s and Ito was active in the 1930, but being a Doi Hangaten i'm not sure approximately when the printing took place. Can someone also give me some info about the approximate date Doi Doi Teiichi, Doi Eiichi and Doi Hangaten seals appeared on Doi prints, thanks (i already know about shin hanga.neet and ukioye gallery and shotei.com)
