Re: "They swoop in at the end and buy them up cheaply"
I don't mean to be rude but - Duh!
That's WHY I shop auctions. If I wanted to pay retail price, I'd go to a gallery with all their reputation and bricks-and-mortar-established guarantees and customer service and all the time in the world to examine and make up my mind without any risk of getting a bad deal.
If one shops auctions, real-life or internet, you're taking a lot greater risk, generally without the benefit of professional appraisal or even the time or ability to thoroughly examine an item.
The trade-off is that one MAY get a really good deal.
Isn't that the fun of the whole thing? How often have you heard someone bragging about what a great deal they got at the auction? I hear it all the time. Note - they don't say "Boy I got this really high quality print for a price that was really fair for the dealer." No! It's always "Wow! Did I get a killer deal!" It's what you live for if you're a true auction addict.
I have to reiterate the previous comments. If you find these sort of actions unpleasant or annoying, you're really in the wrong venue. You need to be in a gallery-type setting where you have more control, I would think. Naturally, this is all IMHO.
