I'd like to humor this obviously misplaced advertisement with a bit of new year's cheer and fantasy.

Can you imagine what would happen if the Tokugawa regime had tried to crack down on smoking?

* What would some of Utamaro's courtesans be without their tobacco pipes?

* What would Santo Kyoden have done for a living?

* Would my books with ash holes burned in the cover be restored to pristine state?

* What would become of the ukiyo-e collection at the Tobacco and Salt Museum in Tokyo? Would these prints become publically available? Could I have some of them? Please??

Somehow Edo wouldn't be half as fun without those one-hit tobacco pipes. A filthy habit and bad for everyone involved (except the taxman) to be sure, but then, it's mortality that gives life its color.

Now, can anyone come up with "New Year's Quit Ukiyo-e Buying Tips for 2003"? I need help with my addiction.

Happy New Year.
