Fugitive and Other Colors

Which colors were the most and least fugitive in Japanese ukiyo-e prints, c. 1800? I am under the impression that some colors fade more easily than others, but which first?

The reason I ask is that I have recently seen some prints of this period with shockingly bright red colors, which surprised me. The other colors in the prints were a bit more faded, so I was taken aback by the strong reds and wondered if they might be overprinted.

On a similar topic, I was wondering how you can know a later reprint by the colors. I have heard that colors look flat and dull in later printings, but when I saw a reprinted Harunobu at the Met in New York, I had a hard time distinguishing it from the originals beside it.

Thank you.
