I believe you are both wrong - or right.

There is clearly an ambiguous element in Harunobu's print, though I very much doubt it was intentional. Take a look at the details above. No. 1 is the original Harunobu print, no. 2 my "correction" of it.

The bottom part of one of the vertical lines is undoubtedly the contour of the door frame - situated behind the balcony support - but the upper end of the same line seems to be part of the front of the support. This is in fact rather similar to Escher's columns, and I can well understand Gerald's interpretation.

However, the most likely explanation is that either Harunobu himself or the person who carved the keyblock, simply made a mistake, letting the line continue too far up.
