Troy,

Actually, Hell and the workings of Karma are not so surprising. Those who commit selfish acts in this life in hell endure dismemberment, soul pounding, isolation in freezing rooms etc. in order to work out their bad karma. But Hell ends, just as life ends, (and even heaven ends) giving way to the next life, a new chance. The bulk of bad karma has been worked out in hell and the being gets a fresh opportunity to rectify itself in a new form in the world. But if it falls into the same sinful patterns of selfishness and desire, then it's back to hell and more of the same.

: Hi,

: I was of the understanding that the Japanese believed in rebirth, but I recently saw a Buddhist wood block book with some amazing scenes of hell. There were tortures unimaginable for those who had done evil acts in life. But my understanding was that the rule of karma says whatever you do comes back to you in this world. How does this apply to Hel.?
