Dear John Fiorillo,

I recently came across two hosoban kappazuri-e stencil prints by Shigeharu published by Wataki in 1829 in an internet auction and purchased one of them. It is on a softer paper than usually found for woodblocks and appears to be painted. I thought you would like to know since you state in viewing prints on Naghide that there are no known stencil prints from this period although Dean Schwaab reports in "Osaka Prints" (p. 18) that two stencil prints by Shigeharu from 1829 are known, quite possibly the ones in the auction.

Interestingly, at least one and possibly both stencil prints show Ichikawa Hakuen (Danjuro VII) in quick change dances. The figure in one of the stencils exactly matches the figure in Keyes "Osaka Prints" (p. 120-121). Apparently, the same key block was used for both the stencil and print by Wataki whose seal is on both.

I tried to pass the information on to Peter Ujlaki as you recommended in your article on Nagahide but the email address is currently unacceptable. Is the email address you list still correct ?

I am very interested to see that you wrote an article on Shigeharu and quick change dancing for Andon but cannot get the article through the local University Library. Id like to compare the figure in the second stencil that I own with the five prints of quick change dances described by Keyes. Are you familiar with these prints ? Have they been published? Also, how do I get a copy of your article?

Appreciate your work!
Arnold
