I'm afraid I could not follow the link at the address you provided (the site comes up as not yet developed.) I did have a look at Schwaab's book though. The scene is almost certainly from one of the "Jiraiya world" kabuki plays, which feature a magician whose familiar is a toad. There are a variety of depictions of the "toad magician" by the Utagawa School in Edo, often utilizing rocks/mountains/boulders in the toad form. The earliest I've seen was by Toyokuni I.
By the way, I rather feel that Schwaab is too free with his use of the phrase "Shijo style". I can see how he would see this as Shijo-influenced, especially in the landscape, but this is a far cry from the Shijo artists I'm familiar with.
