Your response to Diana caused me some introspection, and I thank you for that. Was I wrong to answer her question as forthrightly as I did? Or should I have been more coy and pedagogical? An interesting internal dialog has led me to a conclusion.
I believe that it is quite presumptuous on your part to infer her instructor's motivation or even what would be best for Diana's education. Contrary to your take on the situation, I'm quite impressed with her initiative and the efficient way that she was able to uncover a source of information. The internet contains an overwhelming amount of information. For a student to show the ability to use that resource by:
- finding an online community of people who have the knowledge that she is seeking, and
- posing a coherent and respectful question,
shows me that she has learned a technique which will be of use to her as long as she pursues knowledge.
This young lady gets an "A".
