I've also pondered what the dividing line between the Toyokunis may be.

I thought I had it figured out with the signature. It seemed to me that Toyokuni II always made the "window pane" (my term) portion of the "toyo" character flared out towards the top. Is this the "zig-zag" signature you're referring to? But then I found several prints with this signature that predated Toyokuni I's death.

I've also noticed a trait in many of Toyoshige's actor prints. The nose seems overly long and straight and at the top often branches off to form the eyebrows. Again, I've noticed this also in late Toyokuni I prints, but wondered if Toyoshige wasn't doing the most of the designing by that time.

What was the final word according to the Andon article?
