It sounds like you may have a Japanese wife like I do. I am afraid that my experience is that most modern Japanese are not much better at deciphering old title slips than non-Japanese speaking enthusiasts! However, it is easy to learn to recognise enough characters to spot strategic words like "ehon", "gafu", "Hokusai", "Bumpo" and read the prices, which are often written rather alarmingly as multiples of "man en". Most of the dealers display stock that they are happy for you to open. Otherwise you need to be able to speak knowledgeably in Japanese about whatever you would like to see, which is good practice for your language skills. An 18C colour ukiyo-e is not going to be on an open shelf...
