: I have a woodblock print signed Utamaro and published by Murataya Jirobei. I am trying to determine whether or not this is a true Utamaro print, a print by Utamaro II, or a forgery. Any ideas?? Thank you!

Outright forgeries are very rare, but there are lots of later reprints around, of course, and they can often be difficult to tell from the originals.

The first thing you should do is try to find a reproduction of the original and compare it with your print. The reprints are often marked with additional seals, or they lack seals that are to be found on the originals. Also, the size can be different.

Without a picture of the print, either a scanned image or a good photo, it is impossible for me or anyone else, if the artist is Utamaro I or II, though.
