I received a wonderful Edo period Ukiyo-e print by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) as a wedding gift last year; signed Toyokuni III, date 1848, format Oban Yoko-e, published by Tsujiyasu. The print depicts the three characters Yamagunokawa, Yamauba and Kaidomaru in a comic scene from the play 'Higashi Dairi Karyomon'.
Could anyone kindly tell me more about the play? - I have not been able to find out anything to date and each time I look at the print, it is frustrating not to know anything of the storyline! Also could the print be part of a series?
Finally, I wonder if there is a book published soley on this artist's work - could anyone recommend a title??
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
