What pigments were were used by Ukiyo-e artists? In particular, would you please compare the pigments and palette used by Hiroshige and Utamaro? The limited number of Utamaro prints from museums I have seen tend to have more subtle subdued colors than seen in Hiroshige prints. Although some of the subdued tones may be due to exposure to UV light, was Utamaro's palette in general more subdued than Hiroshige's? Did later printings of Hiroshige likely use synthetic dyes? Thank you very much for any information you can provide including references for further followup. A thank you to Hans Olaf Johansson for answering my previous question on Hiroshige.
