: I have recently aqcuired a modern (1980's) Japanese print by M. Sato, entitled White Tree (I). I have been unable to find any information about this artist on the internet, and the seller had no information either. The print is just gorgeous, and I'd love to find out more. It may be a silkscreen rather than a woodblock, but I thought I'd give you knowledgeable folks a try anyway.

: Anyone know anything? Thanks in advance.

Elizabeth,

I found the following information on Morihiro Sato in an information note circulated by Kappy Hendricks (she began exhibiting, and selling, work by Sato in 1989):
Sato was born in 1943 in Yamagata Prefecture and graduated from Musashino University of Fine Art in 1970. From 1974 to 1979, he was apprentice to Joichi Hoshi (Hoshi died in 1979).
"Mr. Sato's work strongly ressembles the prints of Joichi Hoshi. Like Hoshi, he often chooses to create trees which are bare, white, leafless which are silhouetted against a background of muted greens or reds. He prints with 24 carat leaf gold and silver in the same manner as Hoshi. He first prints a color which includes Nikawa (natural animal paste). The second step of printing is to lay sheets of the leaf gold or silver and print these with a soft textured baren. He then prints other colors in the print, often using the same blocks many times to create texture. He prints the same colors over and over until the texture has been built and the trees begin to become three-dimensional. One of his favorite subjects are the cherry trees of Japan which he has portrayed in the form of single large trees or flowering branches silouhetted against leaf gold and silver. Another favorite subject are flowers of different types which are printed in delicate colors and leaf gold and silver."
Enjoy your print !
Philippe
