Lisa,

I found the following book very useful as an introduction to the theme of ghosts in Japanese prints (it is a collection of essays by various authors): Stephen Addis (editor), Japanese Ghosts and Demons: Art of the Supernatural, George Brazillier (New York) 1985. It is a catalogue of an exhibition of Japanese prints organized by the Spencer Museum of Art, Kansas University.
Another source that I found useful as a reference to get information on the stories behind the pictures is the old book by Henri Joly, "Legend in Japanese Art", originally published in 1908 but reprinted many times since. (The latest copies are published by Charles E. Tuttle (Rutland, Vermont, and Tokyo, Japan). It is organized as a dictionary, with 1,120 entries.
I hope this is useful. Enjoy your prints !
Philippe
