Prints seemed to have been "creponed" at least since the early as there are many examples of Hiroshige first editions of this period which are "creponed". There are also for example early printings of Hokusai 36 Views. ( there are also many late 19th cent. reproductions of these designs which are "creponed").
However crepons became very popular during the 1870s–1910s, we can find many examples from this period.
Crepons seems to be made, in most cases, not by the publisher but by an outside party.
