Thanks Geo, I had wondered about the Genji mon but as you say there does not seem to be any reflection of what is going on in the scene to chapter 23 of Genji. Indeed the whole child/cat thing is quite odd. I am sure the calligraphy in the story cartouche would enlighten but I cannot read it.
