I think that is likely just some sort of random room furnishing item.

The cat child indicates (to me, at least) some sort of mythological story, which I would tend to think rules out Genji.

Alas, I don't know much about Japanese mythology (so many things to learn, so little time!), so I can't help with the identification. But I'm sure the cat-child is the key clue.
