I looked in both:
Henri L. Joly, "Legend in Japanese Art",
Charles E. Tuttle, Rutland, 1967
Juliet Piggott, "Japanese Mythology",
Peter Bedrick Books, New York, 1982
but I didn't see any story involving a cat-child, and none involving a cat and a young woman.
So, it seems that either i) it's not a cat, or ii) it's a fairly obscure story.
