Irwin,

I didn't find another copy either, but there are 4 other single prints in the Waseda db depicting the same performance "Fude torite megumi no ōtsu-e" (Collected blessing scenes of ōtsu-e).

The play was performed at the Moritaza Ansei 4 (1857), 10th month, 13th day and was a 'hengemono'(multi-role dance) - in this case a quick change of five roles ('gohenge') performed by specialist Nakamura Fukusuke I. The only other actor involved seems to be Bandō Mitsugorō.

The censor's seal is a regular 'aratame' seal (改 'aratame' or 'approved').

Surprisingly, the db of Kabuki performances mentions that the play is based on the 'Kanadehon chūshingura'.

The publisher is Sagamiya Tōkichi, seal name 'Aito' (Marks: publisher nr 435, seal 24-009).

Guy
