Hi Irwin,
this print reminds me on a print by Kuniyoshi from his series Tsuzoku Suikoden goketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori (The 108 heroes of the popular Suikoden all told)sheet #33 Henmeisanro Sekishu (resp. Shameisaburo Sekishu) - published in the book 'Of brigands and bravery: Kuniyoshi's heroes of the Suikoden', Klompmakers, Inge; Hotei Publishing, Leiden, 1998, page 94/95 - also mentioned in B.W. Robinson 'Kuniyoshi - the warrior prints', Phaidon Press Ltd., Oxford, 1982, page 102/103 (S2.62).
The scene seen on your print seems to be a kabuki adoption from the Suikoden (mitate?) then.
