Thanks for your info. I also assume that it is a kakuban format that was trimmed. Toyokuni designed some kakuban actor surimono in collaboration with Jihinari around the 1820s. At a later stage Jihinari collaborated also with Toyokuni II on actor surimono.

Looking at some facial features, the actor could well be Nakamura Daikichi. I did a search for the actor, role and play in the major image databases but did not encounter the specific scene depicted in the surimono so far.

I'll take it along to a professional paper restorer shortly. I'll keep you informed about the verdict in which way a restauration could be possible (neutralisation-, reduction of the brown spots etc).
