Good question. The general opinion is that actor prints became so popular at the start of the Bunka era (1804-1829) that Toyokuni had to switch to a more simple, crude and static style in order to cope with the publishers' increasing demand for new designs. But it is also a fact that fashions and tastes changed continuously in Edo society so I think the change of style was due to a combination of different factors.
