Thanks very much for the reference to 'Ukiyo-e shi sōran'. The biographical page on Katsukawa Shunsen there, clearly states that the change of name from Shunsen to Shunkō was already mentioned in 'Mumeiō zuihitsu' (Miscellany of the Old Man with No Name), compiled by Keisai Eisen in 1833 (http://www.ne.jp/asahi/kato/yoshio/kobetuesi/syunsen-katukawa.html).

The only plausible conclusion for the divergent entry in the Hotei Encyclopedia is that it is based on a superseded, outdated source.
