Thank you so much for your insightful and helpful comments. Your guess of the subject, Utaemon IV, may indeed be correct. That would put the period to around 1850, doesn't it?
Unfortunately it seems that Hirosada practically never used any Kaou signatures. I found a picture of Kunisada painting with a rather similar Kaou, in a Japanese book showing nikuhitsu ukiyo-es in the collection of Idemitsu art museum, but the curator was rather wishy-washy as the Kaou deviates so much from his usual toshidama one.
So the mystery still continues.
