Hokusai visited Nagoya twice, in 1812 and 1817. During his first visit he stayed for half a year with Maki Bokusen, preparing the first volume of 'Hokusai manga'. The second visit was in 1817 when he drew a very large publicly-exihibited picture of Daruma. This was some kind of performance, attended by a large crowd. During that second visit Hokusai must have met Bokusen again. Bokusen described the event in the preface of an illustrated book.
Prof. Susumu Matsudaira recounts these journeys in his article "Hokusai's visit to Nagoya', published in Andon 8 (1982).
