Maybe you'd like to take another try at Sadamasa (貞政) - see the scan of his signature from Hirose+Self. Quite similar, yes?

The left-hand radical of the 'masa' is pretty much right on, and the right hand radical, you can see the '<' at the top, and the loop could just be a more s˘sho form, where instead of doing two separate strokes for the 'X' at the bottom of the right-hand radical, he has just looped it around (starting at the top right of the 'X').

Hirose+Self doesn't have that character in the variant tables, but it does have a character with the same radical, and the s˘sho variant of that does indeed have that loop for the 'X' element at the bottom of the right-hand radical.

The only thing that seems out of place is that the ending part of that stroke is purely vertical here - I'd have thought that if it really was an 'X' he was doing, it would have been more slanted at the end of the stroke, rather than vertical.
