This is a good subject. I have always assumed that 36 had some numerological significance in Eastern culture. There are a number of other series that are in grouping of thirty-six. A couple that come to mind are:
Toshikata - 36 Beauties
Yoshitoshi - 36 Ghosts
But didn't Toyokuni III have "35 Beauties Compared to Flowers" or something like that? It does seem to be a common recurring number. There is a brilliant play by Naomi Iizuka called "36 Views". It centers around an Asian art dealer with questionable ethics and asks questions about forgery and what is real and what isn't. It particularly gets interesting when an unknown Heian period pillow book appears...
Any other thoughts on the artistic/numerological/cosmological significance of 36?
