As with everying in Japanese prints, there's always an exception to the rule! While I don't recall ever seeing an oban surimono, large surimono do exist (albeit fairly rare).

For instance, in the Frank Lloyd Wright collection, there are several yokonagaban sized (21cm x 55cm, somewhat larger than oban, at 38cm x 25 cm) by Hokusai (nos. 178, 181, etc).

And I have seen a _double-oban_ surimono (41cm x 55cm)!
