Your print by the artist Toyokuni III, shows the Kabuki actor Ichimura Uzaemon XIII playing the role of "Mizuki Tatsunosuke musume Okiku" ('Mizuki Tatsunosuke's daughter, Okiku') in the play 'Tokaido iroha nikki' performed at the Ichimura-za in the 7th month of 1861. (The print bears the date seal for the 6th month, 1861, so it was published before the play began.) This character was, in reality, an evil cat in disguise. Notice the cat's shadow on the lantern that gives her identity away.
