I received a friendly reply from William Pearl, which concludes my search, so I will post this here for completeness sake. The tryptich he mentions can be seen on,%20Part%20II%20(3-6).htm

Your print is an authentic Kuniyoshi wood block print. It was originally part of a triptych, which I am attaching. It shows the kabuki actor Seki Sanjûrô II in the role of Fuwa Banzaemon (不破伴左衛門). The play is Sakura doki hana no Yoshiwara (Cherry Blossom Time in the Yoshiwara, 桜時花吉原) from the 3rd month of 1833. Note the cherry blossoms on the print. The actor’s name and role have been removed from your print. This indicates that it was reprinted for another production, possibly Hana butai yoshiya otoko (花舞台丹前侠客), 3rd month of 1835. It is still an original Kuniyoshi print.
