One further random thought. One expert recommended examining any kanji writing carefully and I think that works. At the time, say Edo period, everyone wrote with brushes and there is a natural changing of line which fits with that brush usage, later copies somehow rarely get the kanji precisely correct. BTW your statement about 'fresher' seems not founded on any reality and is just a generalization which I don't see much to be true. Best Wishes.
