In which case an octagon was a truncated rectangle, with the corners cut off, or possibly folded back and glued to the verso
The precision of the 8-sided examples I have seen means those ones had the corners cut off by the printers before the point-of-sale
I don't know a lot about fan prints, since they are uncommon to find now. So I'm not sure if I have understood and answered this question completely.
