The artist's signature is missing but the pink box along the top contains the name of the play, which is 'Hana Shobu Keian Jikki' (commonly called after the name of the main character, 'Marubashi Chuya'). This was performed at the Meiji-za Theatre in May, 1902. The print depicts the actor Ichikawa Sadanji I in the lead role of Marubashi Chuya. The other actor mentioned (but not shown on this sheet) is Sadanji's son, Ichikawa Ensho II who was playing the role of 'Nakama Hanzo' (his comrade Hanzo).
