Hans Olof,

Asano and Clark in 'Kitagawa Utamaro' (Vol. 2, nr. 279) give this description but I believe that the subject matter refers directly or indirectly (as a 'mitate') to the tragic lovers Koharu and Jihei on their final journey before committing suicide. The umbrella symbolizes their unity in marriage.

Stories of tragic lovers and adaptations for j˘ruri and later kabuki were veru much en vogue at that specific time.
