In case you're interested in the subject-matter, the Kabuki actor depicted is Sawamura Chojuro V playing the role of Hayano Kanpei who was the retainer of Lord Enya Hangan. The scene here called 'Uramon no Ba' ('The Rear Gate of the Mansion'), is from Act III of the play. Kanpei should be inside the mansion accompanying his lord, but is instead outside dallying with his lover, the lady's maid Okaru. This act of negligence on Kanpei's part has serious consequences in the scenes to follow. This production of the play 'Kanadehon Chushingura' began on the 11th day of the 7th month, 1849, at the Nakamura-za Theatre. Your print would have been issued shortly before, or during the run of this production.
