The artist is Utagawa Toyokuni II.
This print depicts the Kabuki actor Bando Mitsugoro III in the role of 'Shigetada' (Chichibu Shigetada), in the play 'Kawaranu Hana Genji no Kaomise', performed at the Ichimura-za Theatre in the 11th month of 1827.
The print is the left sheet of a triptych, showing a typical 'danmari' (fight in the dark) which was customarily staged as part of the 11th month 'Kaomise' productions.
Interestingly, the master block for this design has been re-cut to show a different role name. Toyokuni II originally designed this portrait of Mitsugoro for a production staged the previous year, but that role was 'Morihisa'. One year later he/the publisher decided to re-use the same design.
