Your picture shows a cover of the book series Shaka hass˘ yamato bunko 釈迦八相倭文庫 (volume 12). It was usually sold bundled together with other volumes of the series.

For example, volume 12 is included in book 5 in this edition:

The author is Mantei ďga 万亭応賀 (1819-1890) and the artist responsible for the pictures in volume 12 is Utagawa Kunisada 歌川国貞 (1786-1865), here signing as Ichiy˘sai Toyokuni 一陽斎豊国. Some of the later volumes were done by other artists including Utagawa Kunisada II 歌川国貞 (1823-1880) and Kawanabe Ky˘sai 河鍋暁斎 (1831-1889).

The series consisted of 58 books total, holding 232 volumes, released between 1845-1871 by the publisher Kinjűd˘ 錦重堂 situated in Edo (modern day Tokyo).

The series was reprinted numerous times, sometimes with less ambitious cover illustrations.
