Both triptychs are titled Omi Hakkei Zenzu and subtitled Ishiyama kara miru (Eight Views of Omi, Complete in One Image, As Viewed from Ishiyama.) The figure is Murasaki Shikibu-- author of the Tale of Genji--who legend says composed it while staying at Ishiyama.
Such revisiting of a master's work is common in ukiyo-e, in which demands for rapid output (and perhaps also a desire to create oneself in the master's established mode) led artists to revisit the earlier work of their lineage.
It's unlikely that many people at the time would have noticed that this was treading old territory, and even if they had, the work would have been taken as an update of the design for the present age (using the colors and lines popular c. 1880s-1890s.)
