The role actually reads Rai Kunitoshi 来国俊 and refers to a swordsmith from the Middle Ages, who appears as a character in the play "Shin usuyuki monogatari" 新薄雪物語. Originally written for the puppet theatre in 1741, it was then quickly adapted for the kabuki theatre as well and premiered in the same year.

The play was later performed in the Kawarazaki-za theatre in April of 1839 under the title of "Toki-ni saiwai sakura-no irodoki" 則幸桜色薗, which may have been the play we are looking for.
