Why do I think that this print is not by Utamaro?

1) The design bears no resemblance, in style or subject, to any other Utamaro work. (Sadly, it's just been assumed that all of these minor works with the Utamaro signature are Utamaro II, which has unfairly ruined the reputation of that artist.)

2) The placement of the signature is odd, too close to the Chinese inscription about the flute-playing boy ox-herder.

3) The signature style does not exactly match the "Utamaro" on genuine prints.

4) Look carefully and critically at the signature. Do you see that the horizontal line of the left radical of "uta" is blurry? Next, do you see the small traces of sumi around the signature? This is a sign of unprofessional printing, and not matched in the inscription above or other lines. If printed at the same time, the line quality should match, but it doesn't.

As I said, I hate to break bad news, but it's far better to know now than to learn later.
