P.S. I'm not sure what words in my long note caused it to be rejected by the server (multiple attempts to post it failed,) but in the apparently problematic middle section I described how some unscrupulous dealers in the 20th century had signature blocks made, and applied them to any unsigned print (or prints from which the signatures could be removed.) You most often find the forged "Utamaro" or "Hokusai" signatures on small prints (chuban or koban) with traditional subjects, or even ikebana designs. But oban are not exempt.
I also mentioned that I am currently working on a guide for Japanese woodblock print collectors, and Amy, if you would kindly give me permission to use your images in it as examples, these could do future collectors much good! As I say in the guide, within every mistake is a valuable learning opportunity.
