Thanks Lucienne. I had seen the text of this but I had not seen the images. This of course is the version where sasarae and child commit ritual suicide (attached image seems to depict this) and seems to differ from the 1888 play.I also hadn't noticed that the arrow scene comes before the suicide of sasarae and child in this version.

One thing about my print is there are no ships in the background, so it's not clear that the ships are coming in that scene. It certainly seems that Tametomo is threatening them or about to strike them, but again, it's not 100% clear.

I think the only way to get to the bottom of this is to read the original play. However the scans are poor quality for OCR and as I said earlier I cannot make any sense of the google translations I get from that document. I know someone who is a translator living in Japan who may be able to understand what is going on, however I am hesitant to ask him at this point.
